Labour councillors secure Peckham Rye Station revamp as calls continue for full accessibility upgrade

Local Labour councillors in Rye Lane have secured the latest win in their campaign for the full upgrade of Peckham Rye Station, as the government announced a £5 million investment that will transform and modernise the station.

As part of this, Labour-run Southwark Council will invest £1 million toward the £5 million total funding.

This new funding will deliver more entrance doors into Peckham Rye Station, as well as reconfiguring the ticket hall to allow for more ticket gates and ease overcrowding at peak times. Works to platforms 3 and 4 will also make them wider and safer for passengers.

Local Labour councillors Jasmine Ali, Esme Dobson and David Parton are continuing to push for more accessibility upgrades and you can make your voice heard by signing their petition at this link here.

Over the next 18 months, the new investment will deliver improvements to make the station easier to use, reduce overcrowding at peak times and help restore its historic character.

These works will also help create a welcoming gateway to Peckham Station Square, a new civic space outside Peckham Rye Station that is due to begin construction by Southwark’s Labour Council this year.

Responding to the announcement, Miatta Fahnbulleh, Labour MP for Peckham, said: “It is brilliant news that we have secured £5 million of funding to upgrade Peckham Rye Station.

Our Labour Councillors in Rye Lane have led a fantastic campaign to unlock this initial funding, and I have been delighted to support them.

This is an important win and the first step to improving the look and feel of Rye Lane.”

Cllr David Parton, Labour councillor for Rye Lane, said: “We’re pleased that our local Labour campaign has secured this significant investment for the much-needed upgrade to Peckham Rye Station.

“Combined with the construction of Peckham Station Square, due to begin soon, this will help transform the heart of Rye Lane and ease overcrowding in and around the station.

“While we are disappointed that the full funding for the new station entrance and lift access has not been provided, we will keep on campaigning for a fully accessible, safe Peckham Rye Station for all.”
