New stats rank Labour-run Southwark top for building new social rent homes

New statistics released by the Greater London Authority have shown that more social homes were completed in Labour-run Southwark than in any other borough in London last year.

In Southwark, 581 brand new social rent homes were completed last year, ranking the borough higher than second-placed Haringey (547) and third-placed Greenwich (440).

5x more social rent homes were completed in Southwark than in all three Liberal Democrat-run councils combined, with only 105 social rent homes completed across Kingston, Richmond and Sutton.

Meanwhile Southwark ranked second in new social home starts, with 363 brand new social rent homes started on site – representing 12% of all new social rent starts in London last year.

In the same year, there were 0 new social rent starts across the three Lib Dem councils.

This data counts homes funded by the Mayor of London’s affordable homes programme, which funded a total of 3,991 new affordable homes starts last year.

Responding to the new data, Councillor Helen Dennis, Southwark Labour spokesperson for New Homes & Sustainable Development, said: “We are proud of our record of building genuinely affordable homes for local people in our borough. It is clear that Labour are the only party serious about tackling the housing crisis – building new social rent homes to help our residents off the waiting list and into brand new, quality homes.”
