Labour councillors in Rotherhithe secure Lower Road changes to ease traffic congestion

Alterations to Lower Road should see traffic congestion ease, after local Labour councillors campaigned for change.

Residents and businesses had reported issues with congestion on Lower Road.

Labour councillors Stephanie Cryan, Bethan Roberts and Kath Whittam led a campaign which made suggestions to reinstate an additional traffic lane to reduce congestion, making it easier for local residents to travel to and from the Rotherhithe Peninsula.

The council have agreed to consult on proposals that would reinstate two lanes between Redriff Road and Plough Way as well as changes to the layout of Cope Street.

Following the welcome news that the council would consider changes, Cllr Bethan Roberts said:

Congestion on Lower Road has been a concern for many of our residents and as your local Labour councillors we have continued to press the case for change.

We are pleased that the council have listened to the concerns of local residents and businesses and have engaged with us as ward councillors to look at a practical solution to help ease traffic congestion.”

The consultation starts on 1st May and there will be a drop in Rotherhithe Ward Forum on 7th May at Canada Water Library from 5.45pm-7.45pm where residents will be able to see the proposals and comment or raise concerns.
